Every December I see the same setup. Three power strips chained together behind the couch, a cord pinched in the window frame, and every outlet on the porch doing double duty. It works, until it doesn't.
How Holiday Light Fires Start
Modern LED light strands don't pull much power. The danger is usually everything between the lights and the outlet.
Extension cords pinched in a window or door frame wear through their insulation. Cords under rugs trap heat every hour they run.
A coiled up cord holds heat too. Indoor rated cords used outside let moisture into the connections.
Daisy chained power strips are the other big one. Each strip adds more load to one outlet that was never meant to carry it.
Warning Signs While You Decorate
- A cord or plug that feels warm
- A breaker that trips when the lights come on
- Lights that dim or flicker as you add strands
- An outdoor GFCI outlet that keeps tripping
Warm is the one people shrug off. A warm cord is telling you it's overloaded. Take it seriously.
Easy Wins You Can Do Today
- Use outdoor rated cords outside, nothing else
- Give each power strip its own outlet, never chain them
- Keep cords out of door frames and from under rugs
- Uncoil cords fully before you plug them in
- Put the lights on a timer so they're off while you sleep
None of this costs more than a trip to the hardware store, and it removes most of the risk.
The Fix That Ends the Cord Mess
The long term answer is simple. Put outlets where the lights go.
A weatherproof outlet up at the soffit or eaves, right where the lights hang, changes the whole setup. It runs on its own circuit and connects to a switch inside the house, or a timer if you'd rather not think about it. This one is an electrician job, it needs proper GFCI protection and weather rated parts, but it's a small project.
You plug the lights in once, up high, and flip a switch by the door. No cords through the window.
No strips on the porch. It's a one time job you use every December after.
While the Ladder Is Out
Holiday hosting has a way of showing off every tired fixture in the house. If you're already thinking about lighting, this is a good window to update.
Dimmers change a dinner table more than any centerpiece. Old builder grade fixtures swap out fast. Outdoor and accent lighting makes the front of the house look sharp before guests come up the walk.

One More Thing About Tripping Breakers
If a breaker trips even when the lights are unplugged, the decorations were never the problem. That circuit was already at its limit, and the lights just pushed it over.
