A panel repair fixes one failed part. A panel replacement puts in a new panel. They are not the same job, and a breaker that trips does not automatically mean the panel has to come out.
When a repair is the job
A repair stays inside the panel you already have. A single breaker that will not reset, a loose connection at one breaker, or a burned wire at one terminal can often be corrected without replacing the enclosure. Replacing a worn breaker is a repair. So is correcting a connection that has loosened over time.
If only one circuit is in trouble and the rest of the house behaves normally, start with that circuit. Our article on a dead outlet or a breaker that keeps tripping covers how those problems show up before anyone opens the panel.
When replacement is the job
Replacement means the panel itself comes out and a new one goes in. That is the right conversation when the enclosure or the bus is damaged, when there is no room left for circuits the house actually needs, or when the panel cannot support a load you are adding. An EV charger is a common example, and it is a separate question from a general repair. Read whether an EV charger needs a panel upgrade before assuming the whole panel has to change.
We assess the panel and the capacity the home needs before recommending replacement. Breaker trips need a diagnosis. A new panel is not the automatic answer. When replacement is the work, we handle the assessment, the permit, the installation, and the inspection.
What to send before the visit
A photo of the closed panel door, the rooms that lost power, and anything you are adding, such as a charger, a range, or a workshop circuit, is enough to start. Do not take the cover off to get a better picture. Heat, a buzzing sound, or discoloration around the panel is a reason to stop using the affected circuits and call.
We do this work in Denver, NC, Lake Norman, Waxhaw, Indian Trail, Mooresville, and Huntersville. The panel upgrade page describes the service, and the Lake Norman panel page is the local version. Contact us if you want the panel looked at before deciding between a repair and a replacement.
